ASM Block 2

Course Description: This course covers the indications for IV therapy in labor and delivery, procedures for establishing, administering, and discontinuing an intravenous catheter and fluids as well as aseptic technique. Risks and complications of IV insertion and transfusion of fluids are also covered. This course is meant to cover all of the information that is provided in an IV certification class. A course with supervision by a certified IV therapy instructor may also be submitted in lieu of this course.

This course uses current research in midwifery and obstetrics to broaden the student’s understanding of the NARM skills and MEAC essential competencies learned under clinical supervision.

Read, listen to, watch assigned lesson materials.

Complete a final exam.

Note: The clinical requirement of NARM /Clinical Skills is completed at any time throughout the ASM apprenticeship during actual clinical practice and is NOT a requirement to complete this academic course. Typical clinical manifestations of knowledge learned in this course are identified in the learning objective document above.
